There are certainly many amenities to consider when looking at a senior living community for your retirement or for a loved one. Food probably tops most people’s lists. Whether you are looking at independent living and want to know what the kitchen in an apartment will offer, or you are looking at assisted living with meals provided, there are many options. Whatever you are looking for and whatever you decide, just make sure it’s right for you and your personal health and wellness.
Senior Dining Services at Westminster Place
At Westminster Place, every meal we offer is planned out by our team of culinary professionals led by our Culinary Director. This level of culinary expertise ensures that meal offerings are fresh, healthy, and innovative each and every day. Residents enjoy a three-course made-to-order menu. Local residents will enjoy the fact that our culinary team carefully crafts the menus to combine the best of East Texas cuisine along with everyone’s favorite comfort foods. One of the best parts is that the dining programs are so flexible so you choose when and where you want to eat your meals and you don’t have to do the dishes! Health And Wellness in Retirement
Healthy eating is a big part of the health and wellness focus at senior living communities, as it should be. Seniors and their families want to make sure that nutritional needs are met, whether the senior living scenario is independent or requires more assistance. Malnutrition is a very real concern and the wellness team at Westminster Place makes sure each individual resident is getting their nutritional needs met. As we age, not getting the proper nutrition can lead to a greater risk of falling, lengthened recovery from injury, hospitalization, and even death. What may have been good for you when you were younger may not be what’s right for you in older age, as our bodies – and their needs – change over time.
What health issues can result from poor nutrition? Here are a few:
- Severe changes in weight
- Issues with muscles that lead to mobility issues
- Poor cognitive function
- Deteriorating bone mass
- Taking longer to recover from illnesses or injuries
- Compromised immune system
As part of a good senior health and wellness program, nutritional counseling should be offered. Many senior living communities will also offer cooking classes and demonstrations to cover what seniors should be looking for in foods as they age. Some seniors may require more protein than they did when they were younger, while others may need less calories than they used to to get the nutrients they need. Each resident works with the wellness team to create a plan for proper nutrition and optimal health.
Good nutrition can also help you manage or even prevent medical conditions like:
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
