What to Look For in a Senior Living Community

What To Look For in A Senior Living Community

When you or an elderly loved one can no longer safely live independently, it may be time to look toward senior living. However, not all senior living facilities or communities provide the same levels of care, services, or amenities. Taking the time to research your options is critical to finding the community best suited to your needs. At Westminster Place, we openly share answers to our most frequently asked questions (FAQ) to help potential residents and their families learn everything they need to know about our senior living community. Westminster Place Senior Living Resource Guide and FAQ

Westminster Place is one of six retirement communities operated by Buckner Retirement Services, with a long and rich history of providing faith-based services in Texas. Westminster Place is unlike other senior living communities in Longview and a departure from the “retirement homes” of the past. Following is a closer look at frequently asked questions:

Why Should I Choose Buckner Retirement Services?

Buckner Retirement Services is an organization built on faith. Buckner Retirement Services is part of Buckner International, an organization serving seniors and strengthening families since 1879. This rich history and mission-driven attitude create a family atmosphere throughout our senior living communities.

What is the Age Requirement for a Buckner Senior Living Community?

Buckner communities serve senior adults who are “62 years or better.” Most residents remain active and are out traveling, volunteering, or working well into their 90s and 100s!

What is the Difference Between a Nonprofit and a For-Profit Senior Living Community?

A religious or charitable foundation usually backs a nonprofit senior living community. Revenue received for services and housing is reinvested solely to improve the community and the organization’s mission. However, for-profit senior living communities are priced to ensure the stakeholder, investors, or managers receive a certain percentage of the revenue.

Are Buckner Communities Rental Communities?

Five of Buckner’s senior living communities are rental communities. Your monthly fee includes the cost of your apartment and access to the services and amenities offered at each community. The sixth, Ventana by Buckner in Dallas, is a Life Care community with an entrance fee.

Where are Buckner Senior Living Communities Located?

Buckner Retirement Services currently has senior living communities in Austin, Beaumont, Dallas, Houston, Longview, and San Angelo, Texas.

What is a Life Plan or Life Care Community?

A Life Plan Community, formerly known as a “Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC),” is a senior living community that offers different levels of living and care on-site. These care options—independent living, assisted living, memory care, long-term and skilled nursing—help meet residents’ changing needs in a comfortable environment they already know with people they already trust.

A Life Care Community is also a senior living community that offers the same care options but different financial arrangements. A life care community typically requires an entrance fee in addition to a monthly fee that covers the costs of services and amenities and ensures future care at below-market rates.

What Questions to Ask an Assisted Living Facility in Longview, TX

Making the right choice in an assisted living community can seem like a never-ending search. The following questions can help you gain more insight into the senior living community best suited to you or your loved one:

  • How does your community welcome a new resident?
  • What kind of training and licensing do the staff and facility have?
  • How many residents do you have?
  • Do you have staff on-site 24/7?
  • What type of meal services do you offer?
  • What type of activities are available?
  • What role does family play?
  • How do you foster a sense of community?
  • How do you track resident happiness?

The core of assisted living is providing seniors with personalized care in a community and residential environment. Seniors with health or ADL needs may require additional support. Assisted living communities should make life easier and more comfortable for seniors and provide social engagement and healthy living services.
